Dordogne and Lot update is designed to support the Rough Guide to the Dordogne & the Lot, of which I am the author. My aim is to provide a place in which to gather incoming information between editions while also making it available to anyone thinking of visiting this region of France. A spot of history .... Since 1992 I have been based in the Gers, an exceedingly rural corner of southwest France which provides the perfect counter-point to the hustle and bustle of Asia. In between tending the vegetable plot, sampling summer fêtes and indulging in the local cuisine (a heady - and reputedly healthy - combination of duck, garlic and red wine), I have also been pursuing my favourite occupation - exploring every little back lane and one-street village. My travels have gradually reached further afield as I criss-crossed southwest France - from Nimes to Bayonne and from the Pyrenees north to Limoges and the Massif Central - to help update the last three editions of The Rough Guide to France (1997, 1999 & 2001). So it was that I began to explore the magnificent country along the Dordogne and Lot rivers. What I found inspired me to write the Rough Guide to the Dordogne & the Lot (also covering Bordeaux and its vineyards, much of the Lot-et-Garonne and Tarn-et-Garonne, and smaller fragments of the Correze and Aveyron departments). I am already itching to go back and lose myself again among the region's endlessly enticing lanes ......
